Deputy mayor writes to new RFL chief as Salford Red Devils fan group stresses need for drastic action

Salford Red Devils

Salford council’s deputy mayor Jack Youd has written to the RFL’s interim chief executive Abi Ekoku regarding continued Salford Red Devils concern.

The Red Devils released a statement on Wednesday to confirm that their winding up petition hearing has been adjourned a fourth time with a new date of December 3 being set. The adjournment comes just 14 days after the owners declared that they would have the funds needed to save the club within a 12-day period.

That statement of intent appeared to be a positive one from the ownership, who outlined their ambition to keep the club in its current guise afloat with supporters and local businesses at the heart of the decision. They even went as far as to speak about their intention to return to Super League in 2027 after seeing the club slip out of the top flight last month.

However, that money has evidently not arrived and there is growing concern among fans about whether it will. As such, if Salford’s ownership cannot settle the club’s debts come the start of next month, it seems liquidation is a very real possibility.

In light of the yesterday’s update, Youd took to social media to confirm he has reached out to the RFL’s Ekoku to request an urgent meeting about how they can work together to keep Salford alive.

Salford council deputy mayor speaks out on Salford Red Devils situation

“I completely share the frustration all Salford Reds fans are feeling today,” Youd said. “Another adjournment and no communication from the two owners of the club leaves everyone still in the dark.

“I do not believe that the two owners have the best interests of the club at heart and we’ve yet to see any viable plan for the club for the next season.

“I have written to the new RFL CEO Abi Ekoku earlier today to request an urgent meeting with me and Andy Burnham to discuss how Salford Council and the RFL can work together to get the best outcome and keep Salford RLFC alive. I’m hoping to hear a response very soon.

“I appreciate the anger and concerns of fans players and staff and will keep you updated as developments take place.”

Supporter group The 1873 have also confirmed that they have written to the governing body and the council in the aftermath of the most recent adjournment.

In the letter to the council, The 1873 call on the club’s tenancy agreement at the Salford Community Stadium to be terminated. The council own the ground and the fan group believe that a termination would then give the RFL grounds to revoke the club’s membership to the league which would give a new consortium a chance to start afresh and preserve the club’s 152-year history.

The RFL and SL must be cheering the situation they helped construct. While the fans continue to attack the owner and come to some very odd destructive strategies those two villains hide in the shadow of the two in charge of the club.

The fans anger is completely understandable but their attacks look like bringing the club to extinction even more quickly.

Mind you surely extinction is better no players, no coach and imaginary investment or being a part of the sport of Rugby League.

1st James you should read the supporters suggestions carefully.
2nd the mayors should know by now that they will be waiting a long time before they receive any sensible or trustworthy, truthful reply from the two cowardly clowns who pretend they give a damn about Salford RLFC. The pair of them should be physically run out of the club (but be careful with the fat one; I doubt very much that he can run, the fat slug can barely walk)

Mayor can’t be bothered now, leaving it to his deputy.
