Deputy mayor issues Salford phoenix club update with decision pending

Salford council’s deputy mayor Jack Youd has given an update on a Salford Red Devils phoenix club.

The RFL were due to announce a decision on a new club in Salford on Wednesday, with the governing body setting that deadline themselves after taking interest from three parties.

However, the RFL missed that deadline with a short statement only serving to confirm that officials are continuing to work with the three parties who came forward to take on Salford.

It is hoped that a decision can be made early next week and it must be said that time is of the essence, with the new club currently scheduled to kick off their Championship season on January 16 against Oldham.

Taking to social media this week, though, Youd has given an update on the situation from his point of view. The councillor has confirmed that agreements in principle have been signed off for two of the interested parties to play at the Salford Community Stadium.

Youd has also confirmed that the council has done all it can with the decision now resting firmly in the hands of the RFL board.

Salford councillor gives update ahead of RFL decision

“Agreements in principle done for two groups and sent to the RFL about 3 hours ago,” he wrote on X. “Everything done our end.

“Their decision now on who receives the membership. I can only wait along with all the fans.”

Salford were officially wound up by the High Court on December 3, with the club’s former owners failing to find the needs needed to keep the club afloat.

Since then there has been interest from parties led by former Salford CEO Chris Irwin, ex-Salford winger Mason Caton-Brown and another group believed to be led by Tracy Atiga.
