Departing Leeds Rhinos star makes bold prediction ahead of Wigan Warriors clash

Departing Leeds Rhinos winger David Fusitu’a has made a bold prediction, ahead of his side’s Super League clash with top-of-the-table Wigan Warriors this week.

The 29-year-old will leave the Rhinos at the end of the season, after three injury-riddled years at Headingley.

He missed the 2022 Grand Final through injury, and this season has been similarly frustrating: the missed the first couple of the months of 2024 due to a knee problem, and then he injured the knee on his return –  but not before scoring a try.

A big-name signing after over 100 NRL appearances for NZ Warriors, he has scored 18 Super League tries in 42 appearances, and only has two more opportunities before his contract expires.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, he spoke about their upcoming fixtures against Super League’s top two, Wigan Warriors and Hull KR.

He said: “We came really close against Hull KR at home and we were able to beat Wigan at home a few weeks ago.

“I feel like there is some belief in our team and if we keep on performing, we can do something.”

Last time Leeds met Wigan, last month, the Rhinos emerged 30-4 victors – a game in which Fusitu’a started on the wing.

The week earlier, a home game against Hull KR ended 20-12 to the visitors, but seemed to lay some of the groundwork for the victory over the Warriors.

Fusitu’a continued: “I think we have got an opportunity to do something, as long as we can perform like we have been doing in the past month and put in a good performance.

“Last week (a 68-6 win over Hull FC) was a good team performance; I think we stuck at what we wanted to do and as long as we stick to our plan this week and execute it, we will do pretty well, I’d say.”

The Rhinos are currently level with St Helens, but are behind on points difference.

They’ll be hoping the Saints slip up against Castleford Tigers on Friday night.
