David Fifita set for shock Wakefield Trinity departure

David Fifita is set for a shock Wakefield Trinity departure.

The former Cronulla Sharks forward joined Wakefield Trinity ahead of the 2016 season after wanting to be more than a bit-part player in the NRL with the ‘Big Bopper’ becoming a cult hero at Belle Vue.

From debuting in 2016 to 2021, Fifita has made 121 appearances in the red, white and blue of Trinity, but he will be making his last appearance at the Belle Vue stadium this Thursday against Hull KR.

Fifita posted on Instagram: “IG BOPPERS FAREWELL🤙🏽
When: Thursday 25th August
Where: be well support stadium (Belle vue)

This is the end of an era! What a ride it has been!! Looking forward to what lies ahead…. Sincerely yours Big Bopper.”

It had been possible for David and his brother Andrew to finish off playing together at Wakefield.

“We had it a Wakefield last year where it was pretty much over the line and I was so excited by it and he pretty much said that the awful injury he went through and he thought I was finished,” David Fifita recalled previously on The Full Eighty Minutes podcast.

“We went downhill then me and him because we knew how much it meant to each other and how we got the best out of each other.

“We started together at under-6s if there is a chance next year for us to play together then I want it.

“It’s still a part of his dream for us to play together for a year – I’m excited, if he comes over I’m happy to carry on because I do feel good.”

With David’s departure from Wakefield confirmed, however, it appears as though that reunion will end up elsewhere.
