David Fifita opens up on relationship with Wakefield Trinity

Prop David Fifita has become one of Super League’s great characters in recent seasons.

The former Cronulla Sharks forward joined Wakefield Trinity ahead of the 2016 season after wanting to be more than a bit-part player in the NRL.

“I was in a system at the Sharks where I was more the 18th man instead of playing and I felt I had a lot more to offer,” Fifita told the RL Review podcast.

“I spoke to Chris Chester and he sold me on the place and the next thing I was at Wakefield and haven’t looked back since.”

Fifita, however revealed it takes some getting used to after playing in the NRL.

“I don’t have a bad word about Chris Chester – he made me the player I am today and he let me be who I wanted to be and play the I want to play.

“After the first year here, I started to understand the game of Super League – it’s a bit hard you’ve got to get used to it.

“You can bring all these superstar players over and they don’t know how it works.

“You’ve got to adjust to the game, it’s a lot different to the NRL where it’s all wrestle, but once I knew it’s my style of footy over here, I loved playing Super League.”

The Wakefield forward had forged a good relationship with Chester over the years and was upset that he was let go of towards the back end of the 2021 season.

“Personally it hurt me a lot, I came here because of him and he let me do what I want and let my game go to another level.

“It really hurt me, it felt crap because he did have an extra year there to sign.”
