When Daryl Powell announced he would be leaving Castleford Tigers after almost nine years at the club, there were a number of shocked gasps.
Even more so when it was revealed that he would be taking over at Warrington Wolves – a side whose head coach Steve Price had led them to Challenge Cup glory in 2019 against St Helens.
However, Powell has now spoken about his time at Castleford and why expectations changed at one key point.
“People always say it is different at Warrington than it was at Castleford,” Powell told the Through The Wire podcast.
“I would agree with that up until 2017 and then nothing but finishing top of the table and winning the Grand Final was good enough.
“The expectation there (at Castleford) is still like that, 2017 set a whole new barrier for the new team.
“I had to deal with that expectation and no one’s expectation is higher than mine.”
Powell started his Warrington career in good fashion, winning his opening three games on the bounce before losses to St Helens, Catalans Dragons and two home losses to Wakefield Trinity has brought in a difficult period for the ex-Leeds Rhinos and Featherstone Rovers boss.
