Daryl Powell slams controversial video refereeing call in Warrington Wolves’ loss to Hull FC

Daryl Powell’s Warrington Wolves went down 18-16 to Hull FC this evening.

But, with Warrington in the driving seat until the final few minutes following a late Matty Ashton try, Hull went up the other end and looked to have forced their way through with Manu Ma’u.

Referee Chris Kendall went to the screen, but gave an on-field verdict of try which left video official Marcus Griffiths no choice but to award a try – even though the ball could not be seen.

And, for Wire boss Daryl Powell, it’s a rule that needs to be changed.

“I just think they’ve got to change the rules,” Powell said on Sky Sports following the game.

“You’re kind of guessing about what you’ve seen, but we will improve from that, in terms of effort and spirit that was awesome.

‘The ball is up, the referee’s guessed, but it’s the rules.

“There is a different way of doing that – we’ve got a system here and one different one in Australia and it’s such a big call in a game of this tightness.

“You’ve got to get it right and guessing isn’t the way to do it.”

Powell also gave an update on captain Jack Hughes after he left the field with a dislocated shoulder.

“It’s gone back in but it’s taken a while to get in – I hope Jack is ok and we will see how he is.”
