Warrington Wolves are in a bit of a pickle at present.
With four losses in a row, Daryl Powell’s men are hardly breaking any pots in 2022, despite winning their opening three games of the Super League season.
And, in the past, despite being consistently in the play-offs with a great Challenge Cup-winning pedigree, a Grand Final win has eluded them.
And, now Powell has explained why.
“The team has had really good seasons winning Challenge Cups and they’ve got to Grand Finals and it’s not quite happened,” Powell told the Through The Wire podcast.
“The expectation at times is a little bit of that issue and it’s about taking that expectation away at times but making sure the players know what is expected of them – it’s about getting the balance right.
“I’m big on the environment and getting that culture right so that the players make sure they earn everything you get.
“I really believe in that, I can’t say whether that has been there in the past but that’s what I want.”
Powell has revealed that there will be ‘tough conversations’ with players in a bid to turn things around at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
“Obviously there will be tough conversations with some players who haven’t had that in the past.
“Sometimes it might take a little bit of time to get that message across but they will be consistent messages because that’s what I want and I won’t go away from that because it’s what I believe in.
“Once you start slipping off your messages or go against the words you are saying then it’s not going to work – it’s a journey.
“I’m not sure whether I would click my fingers and change – that would be naive as change is always difficult.
“As soon as we’re under pressure we’re reverting back to old times and we’re not consistent with that at the moment.
“I’m not saying they want to but it’s force of habit, it’s been four years under a previous coach. we can do it but we have to think about it.”
