Daryl Powell reveals RFL letter from Steve Ganson

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell has been told he is danger of bringing the game into disrepute by the RFL’s head of referees Steve Ganson.

The Tigers boss this week received a letter from the Rugby Football League regarding his comments following last Thursday’s defeat to Huddersfield.

In his post-match press conference, Powell claimed the current level of officiating was not good enough after his team fell on the wrong side of some debatable calls.

And the Castleford coach revealed that Ganson sent him an official warning about his remarks through the post.

“I never got to talk with Steve Ganson but I received a notice from the RFL about those comments,” said Powell.

“I did not think I was that bad towards any particular referee, I just talked about them improving and I have to answer those issues.

“I think everybody should want to improve and you cannot hide behind anything. I know I cannot as a coach.

“I am trying to improve every week, so are the players and that was my main point really.

“We are all looking to get better in rugby league and you should still be judged on what you do.

“Not everybody is, unfortunately, but I will be answering those.”

Powell is no stranger to run-ins with the RFL after he was given a suspended £5,000 fine for “entering the field of play” during a game against St Helens last season.

Although he recognises wrongdoing on that occasion, Powell is adamant he only tries to do good by the game.

“I do not think I ever bring the game into disrepute,” he said. “I should not have walked on the field a couple of years back but I have always done everything I can to help the sport of rugby league.

“I am offended that ‘whatever it is’ think that I do not.”
