Daryl Powell says “jibes” at Warrington fans “really wind me up” as he hits back at critics

Daryl Powell’s second season in charge of Warrington Wolves kicks starts tonight in the same way as the first: up against Leeds Rhinos.

They won that game last season but in the end the Wolves went on to struggles.

Speaking on Talksport today, Powell gave his assessment of what went wrong in 2022 and how things could change in 2023:

“There was a number of different things that I won’t get into that derailed our season and we ended up losing a lot of confidence and it didn’t finish the way we wanted it to finish.

“I keep saying this to people but I’ve never met anybody who can change the past but you can dictate what’s going to happen in the future. We’ve had an awesome pre-season, we believe we’ve got our recruitment right and that’s going to be put to the test over the season.

“Obviously we need to start well, there’s a lot of people who don’t coach saying  a lot of things at the moment but there’s nothing I can do about that. It’s just about what we do from hereon in and we need to start well.

“What I’d like to see tonight is the players go out there and show what we’re about. We want to get this place rocking, it’ll be a great atmosphere tonight and the players that are taking the field are the ones that can spark it up. From what I’ve seen in pre-season and the game against Leigh I think there’s a team that can do that.”

Powell also hit back at some of the predictions being made about his team saying: “There are a lot of people who don’t coach saying a lot of things at the moment”

He then added when the “it’s always your year” chants were brought up:

“I don’t hold much in predictions, people who predict generally get it wrong don’t they? I don’t really want to worry about that, it’s about what we do and how we dictate.

“What I really want to do is make sure we give our fans an outstanding season where they don’t get belittled by those jibes which have been consistent and really wind me up.

“So we have a duty to our fans to make sure we put it all out there, that they see that we care, we connect and we love the club and the game and what it’s all about. I think we’ve got that, everything I’ve seen so far says we’re going to have an awesome season.

“We’ll see tonight with the start, we need to go well against a pretty determined Leeds team. I think we’ve got a confident team, a well balanced team, a pretty physical one and we should see that tonight.”
