Daryl Powell opens up on what Wakefield Trinity win over Warrington Wolves meant to him

Wakefield Trinity

Daryl Powell has promised to buy his Wakefield Trinity players a beer following what was an important win from both a personal and collective perspective. Sunday was the first time Powell had been back to Warrington Wolves since being dismissed by the club in July 2023 and he was delighted to see his Wakefield side claim a 30-16 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Wakefield fell behind twice in the first half but they responded on both occasions with tries coming from Jack Croft and Liam Hood to give themselves a slender lead at the break. Matty Russell got the Trin moving in the right direction in the second half and efforts from Matty Storton and Caleb Uele gave the visitors a commanding victory.

Powell was keen to play down talk of his own personal agenda when speaking after the game, but he did admit the win and performance meant a lot to him.

“We played Leeds round one and at the moment we’ve won two away and lost two at home so we want to flip that around and be winning at home as well,” Powell said when asked if it means more for him against his former club. “It’s probably more media stuff but this was an important game for me today, it’s the first time I’ve been back here.

“I didn’t do press this week, I didn’t want it be about me, I thought it’s more important that it’s about the players and I’ll buy them all a beer at some point for that performance today.”

On his Wakefield Trinity side’s showing in the north west, Powell said: I felt we were really good. We started the first half a little bit shaky but I always thought that when we were in good attacking positions that we were going to cause Warrington some trouble, we just turning the ball over a little bit cheaply.

“I thought we had a lot of control and patience in the second half and we built up a really good score for ourselves.

“I feel like we haven’t quite executed as well as we would have wanted to so far being back in Super League but I thought we have more composure and class about us so it’s a big win for us, that, really important.

He added: “We lost Pittsy (Jay Pitts) the other day, we’ve got nine players injured at the moment and I know Warrington have good a few missing too but we’re really pleased with where we’re at and I think two from four – there was only the Saints game really where we haven’t been as good as we wanted to be.

“We’re in a good place mentally, physically we’re starting to get some players back and we feel like we can challenge anybody.”
