Daryl Powell ‘not confident’ of incoming signings despite Thomas Mikaele return links

Warrington Wolves were riding the crest of a wave early on in the season with their opening win over Leeds Rhinos highlighting that they were back from their 2022 slump, but their first defeat to Wigan Warriors in round nine exposed some frailties and it’s been a grind ever since.

There’s been numerous reasons behind Warrington’s huge shift in form with injuries certainly not helping, in particular losing George Williams of late.

However, one key person who was missing was Thomas Mikaele, the big prop forward started in all of their first seven games, all seven of which they won.

It was at that point that he returned down under after being released by the club so he could return to his family and since his departure the club hold a record of just four wins and eight losses in the league, as well as having being knocked out of the cup by 12-man Wigan Warriors.

There had been recent speculation that Mikaele was set to return to give a much-needed boost to a pack that has also lost pre-season signing Josh McGuire following his release after a whopping 12-game ban.

When asked about that today Daryl Powell welcomed the idea but said he wasn’t confident any deals will be done before the August 4th deadline.

“I don’t really know, it’s something that I’ve been talking about behind the scenes for a few months but I don’t know where it’s at.

“It’d be pretty good, wouldn’t it, absolutely. But look, I don’t know, I can’t give you any real information on that. But we know Tom and he’s a quality player and he knows us, so it’d be a perfect fit. But whether it can happen or not, I can’t give you any more information on that.”

In regards to making any signings before the August 4th deadline, and not specifically Mikaele, Powell remained uncertain.

“I wouldn’t have a clue. I don’t think you can be confident at the moment, looking at what’s happening in the competition and overseas.

“I wouldn’t say I’m confident but we’ve been looking now since we lost those two boys back to Australia. Jordy Crowther has come up, he’s come in and fitted in pretty well straight away. So, we’ll wait and see but I wouldn’t say I’m confident.”
