Daryl Powell makes Jake Wardle and Greg Minikin decision and surprise George Williams move as Warrington Wolves prepare for Salford

Warrington Wolves named three potential debutants in their 21-man squad for today’s game.

But one of those debutants in former Wigan man Matty Nicholson was already written off yesterday when he played for the reserves scoring against London.

With Matty Ashton injured, there would be a definite opening for one of the two other potential debutants in Greg Minikin who joined in the off season from Hull KR but has been hit by injury whilst Jake Wardle was also an option in the backs after featuring in a swap move which saw Toby King join Huddersfield Giants for the rest of the season.

It appeared only one would feature in place of Ashton but in a curious twist of fate, both have been named with Minikin taking Ashton’s wing spot and Wardle replacing Peter Mata’utia in the centres.

This is because Mata’utia has moved into the halves in place of George Williams who was named in the 21-man squad but has been left out but for what reason we do not know.

It means that neither of Warrington’s high profile halfbacks start in the halves with Gareth Widdop at fullback with Stefan Ratchford in the halves instead.

The Wolves take on Salford who are level on points with the Wire. Today’s result could determine which side has a better shot at the play-offs in 2022.
