Daryl Powell explains big George Williams decision

George Williams

We have some huge games tonight as Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves collide, Leeds Rhinos host Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity go to Huddersfield Giants.

The team news has long since been confirmed with Blake Austin back in the mix for Leeds and Brad Schneider set for his Hull KR debut.

The halfback replaces Mikey Lewis who is out with a head injury. He joined the club from the Canberra Raiders.

But in what will be seen as the main event clash, Matt Peet is sticking by his formula of starting Bevan French at six with Jai Field at fullback.

Interestingly, Cade Cust is left out completely and named as the 18th man.

As for Warrington, Daryl Powell has made the bold decision to leave out George Williams after his hamstring injury recently.

Danny Walker is named at stand-off subsequently with Daryl Clark at nine.

He has also been forced to name Matty Russell and Connor Wrench on the wings with Josh Thewlis and Matty Ashton out.

Powell has now explained this decision.

“He’s trained there a fair bit to be honest. He’s a quality rugby league player and understands the game implicitly. He’ll do a great job for us,” he said on Sky Sports.

“George trained all week and just wasn’t quite ready. It’d have been too much of a risk, it is what it is but we’ve got a great team out there.”

It is undoubtedly a big blow ahead of the game against his former club.
