Daryl Powell confirms important Warrington Wolves duo will miss start of the season

Warrington Wolves fans were given a piece of bad news over the weekend when head coach Daryl Powell revealed that a key trio will miss the start of the season through injury.

Toby King and captain Jack Hughes will not be available for round one and Powell told the Warrington website just what it was wrong with the duo

“Toby King is coming back from a knee issue and potentially round two or three, but the signs are positive on him at the moment,” Powell said.

“He (Jack Hughes) might be a bit after that. He had wrist surgery and his rehab is still progressing so we’re still waiting on confirmation of when he’ll be available.

Mike Cooper also missed out on Stefan Ratchford’s testimonial through illness but he will be raring to go for round one.

However, Powell was disappointed with the Wolves’ 14-6 loss to Wigan on Saturday night – but he did praise the Warriors for their attack and defence.

“I wanted it to look better than what it did. It’s our first game so there’s an understanding that it’s not going to look perfect by any stretch.

“I thought first half our game management was poor. Obviously we conceded that try from a kick that was from out of nowhere and we’ve conceded two genuine tries.

“I think Wigan looked a bit more fluent than we did with the ball and it’s something for us to tidy up.

In the second half we didn’t get what we wanted, Wigan defended well, and our execution and patience wasn’t where it needed to be.

“It is a pre-season game and allows me to have a look at the performance which was the first for myself as Head Coach. There were some signs of some good things but we’re going to have to improve significantly over the next few weeks.”
