Daryl Powell believes Warrington Wolves can still make the play-offs

Last night, Warrington’s season hit rock bottom.

The Wolves, like their opponents Leeds, started the season with great promise and delivered with three wins in a row to start the campaign.

Since then, it’s been slim pickings which has seen them drop out of the top six. Last time out against Champions St Helens, they showed real promise pushing them all the way, but last night they were blown away by Rohan Smith’s Leeds Rhinos side.

They lost 40-4 in a defeat which saw Leeds leapfrog the Wolves in the table leaving four teams between the Wolves and a place in the play-offs.

That said, Daryl Powell insisted his side could still make the play-offs after the game when speaking to Jenna Brooks of Sky Sports.

“I still think we can,” Powell said when asked if the Wolves could still make the play-offs, “I’m certain we can. We’ll have to be better than that.”

He also insisted that the Wolves are in a good place at present: “I think we’re in a good place. I think we’ve had some difficulties. I think we’re aligned now and headed in the right direction. Today is a big bump in the road and we can’t let this derail us. We’re in a positive frame of mind.”

Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the defeat “hurt like hell” as he had to listen to his own fans boo his side for much of the game.
