Danny McGuire on his Castleford Tigers recruitment hope and Jack Ormondroyd pursuit

New Castleford Tigers boss Danny McGuire hasn’t ruled out a signing before the season starts next week.

McGuire is keen to add more depth to his squad as Castleford aim to improve on last year’s 10th-place finish in Super League.

Tigers’ competitive campaign begins at Bradford Bulls in the Challenge Cup on Sunday, February 9 and asked at a pre-season media briefing today (Friday) if there is the “potential for any incomings before the season starts”, McGuire said: “Yes.

“We have a few injuries. Louis Senior is still not right so we are probably a little bit light in the outside-backs and we have been looking for a middle for a while so there’s potentially a bit going on there.”

But the former Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR man stressed: “That goes on behind the scenes and my focus is on coaching the players I’ve got.

“If somebody new comes in who can add something to our team, we will welcome him in and bring him up to speed,, but until that happens, it is just business as usual – coaching my players, trying to improve them and get the best out of the group we’ve got. So to answer the question, potentially, but not at the minute.”

Castleford Tigers have been chasing former Leeds and Featherstone Rovers prop Jack Ormondroyd, but their hopes of prising him away from Salford Red Devils seem to be fading.

The 33-year-old was expected to be available after cash-strapped Salford were ordered by the RFL to sell players to cut costs.

However, overseas investors are close to completing a takeover which would put the Red Devils on a firmer financial footing and allow them to keep their star names.

McGuire played with Ormondroyd at Leeds and admitted: “I like him, I think he’s a good player and would be a nice fit for us, but don’t think anything is happening there at the minute.

“I don’t know what’s happening at Salford, but they seem to be okay now. That’s probably on the back burner for a bit or might not happen.”

McGuire insisted: “I’m just focusing on what we’ve got and getting the best out of the players who are here.

“If someone of Jack’s quality and experience comes in, happy days – he’ll add something to the team, but at the minute, that’s not happening.”
