Hull FC have confirmed that club legend Danny Houghton has returned to the club to join the club’s academy coaching staff. Houghton hung up his boots at the end of the 2024 Super League season after spending 18 seasons with the Black and Whites as a player.
He played 451 games for the club in that time and that puts him joint-third in the club’s list of all-time appearance makers, behind just Mick Scott and Ned Rogers. He will be putting all that experience to good use in a new role with Hull after taking up a voluntary coaching consultancy role with the Under-18s.
He’ll offer advice and guidance to those making their way through the club’s academy ranks, while also providing support to the coaching department. The role is Houghton’s first as a coach and academy head Francis Cummins will be keen to see him make a positive impact within the group.
The ex-hooker will be joined by Jack Lazenby, who will be working as an assistant coach under Cummins.
Head of youth Richard Tate told the Hull FC website: “We are really pleased to have Jack and Danny onboard to help support Francis Cummins and help develop our next generation of potential.
“Franny has a real love for the game and a drive to develop our clubs’ junior players. That drive and desire is infectious and it’s fantastic to see that same mindset in both Jack and Danny in the early weeks of our academy pre-season.”
“Jack provided some valuable ideas and insight for last years junior playing groups, whilst he was combining his ever-growing coaching enthusiasm alongside playing for West Hull ARLFC in the NCL Premier Division.
“And Danny has been an ideal role model for so many aspiring rugby league players in and around the Hull area for so many years, and it’s great to see that he has volunteered to take his playing and leadership experience and transition that into the coaching environment.”
