Danny Buderus highlights quality that would make Brad Arthur a perfect Leeds Rhinos coach

Leeds Rhinos defeated Leigh Leopards last week but they now face a week’s break that will be consumed by a search for a head coach and former player Danny Buderus has weighed in on rumours regarding Brad Arthur.

Buderus had flown over for just 72 hours to help celebrate the life of Rob Burrow at the game between the Rhinos and Leigh last night with 17,535 turning up at Headingley to pay tribute to Burrow who succumbed to his fight with MND, aged 41, at the start of the month.

Jamie Jones-Buchanan had hinted that the key reason behind Brodie Croft’s Man of the Match performance was a pre-match speech by former Australia international Buderus. Croft scored two tries in the first half and was emotional post-game but he will certainly be the linchpin for whoever takes over as head coach.

There are reports that man will be Brad Arthur, former Parramatta Eels boss, and now Buderus, who works in the media down under, has had his say on whether Arthur would fit in at Headingley.

The removal of Rohan Smith as head coach actually happened whilst Buderus was in the air, something he confirmed whilst speaking to BBC Radio Leeds.

He told them: “Being involved in the sport in Australia, you understand it’s a moving beast, there’s so much news all the time. It’s really disappointing news for Rohan and the club and I’m sure decisions have been made by both parties that have seen both parties benefit from it I suppose.”

When asked about what qualities the man to replace Smith should have, Buderus claimed leadership will be internal, something that he’d go on to explain that Brad Arthur has plenty of.

“I don’t know what they’re after. There’s a lot of quality coaches out there. It all depends on what their recruitment style will be or what they’re after. I haven’t watched too much Super League this year and where Leeds are at.

“I’m sure they’re after a leader of some sort. I’m working with Brian McDermott week in, and week out over there but I’m not sure where they’re at. It’s a very young squad at the moment there and I’m sure they need a coach that’s going to educate them and get them firing. ”

Asked specifically about Brad Arthur, Buderus said: “Yeah, he’s a very good coach, 10 years at the Eels, was across the Junior Eels Programme and the pathways. I think if he was to get the opportunity to come across he’d be an awesome coach.

Buderus would then make somewhat of a recommendation as he was asked if Arthur would be a good fit for Leeds Rhinos, answering: “I think so, yeah, he’s got that leadership quality that I guess they’re all after here and I think longevity is the key, I think the coach that comes in needs to stay for a while and not just have an opportunity and then go back to Australia.

“I’m sure that’s in the back of their mind, that they want someone to really steer the ship and get some longevity in that role.”
