Cunningham optimistic on England chances

England Women’s player and RLWC 2021 Ambassador Jodie Cunningham has said she is optimistic about England’s chances at the upcoming World Cup.

The training were bases for each team were officially announced earlier this week, with England Women being based in Leeds, along with Papua New Guinea, Brazil and Canada, as well as Jamaica and Ireland Mens Teams.

The Australia Jillaroos and New Zealand Kiwi Ferns have largely dominated the Women’s international game in recent years but Cunningham believes England will be well in the mix in 18 months time.

She said: “I think we’re in a great position to do really well across all three tournaments. The men and the wheelchair both got to the final in 2017, and were narrowly defeated.

“I think that will set them up to hopefully edge in that a little bit, and win the trophy.

“For the women, we have worked so hard, and had a lot of increased backing and profile since the last World Cup leading into this one.

“I think all that support we have, a lot of young girls and athletes coming into the game, we are in a great position to go one better, and reach the double-header at Old Trafford.

“But also, to win the trophy is the ultimate goal, and it’s all the focus we have had since 2017.”
