Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR met in a golden point thriller, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves met in a fast paced encounter and St Helens lost a so called “Grand Final dress rehearsal” to Catalans Dragons in what was another great weekend for Super League and a great jumping off point for the Challenge Cup semi-finals this weekend.
We also saw two vital games at the bottom of the league. Wakefield Trinity’s great form was stopped by West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Giants on Friday giving Castleford Tigers the chance to move four points clear at the bottom.
However, Hull FC won to keep their play-off hopes alive before on Sunday Salford Red Devils’ play-off hopes were hurt by defeat to Leigh Leopards.
Despite a great weekend of Super League, every week is punctuated by disciplinary and that was again the case this week.
Eight players were charged by the match review panel but only one suspended in the shape of Liam Hood.
This was the reason why: Dangerous Contact – A defending player makes contact with an opponent after the ball has been released by an opponent in a vulnerable position which causes flexion to the head, neck or spinal column on an attacking player, which poses an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.
However, Hood will not miss a single Super League game given that Wakefield’s reserves play this week allowing him to serve the suspension there.
New signing Josh Griffin will also be able to shave off some of his suspension through this weekend in a vital boost in the relegation battle.
Following the latest round of Betfred Super League fixtures, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:
Liam Hood (Wakefield Trinity) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Max Jowitt (Wakefield Trinity) – Grade B Strikes – £250 Fine
