Comparing the NRLW huge new salary cap to Super League’s

Last night the NRL and Players Union (RLPA) led by former Hull KR star Clint Newton edged rugby league towards safety as after plenty of disagreements the two parties were able to decide upon the next elements of the CBA.

These pertained to the NRLW and a huge increase in terms of financial reward for players in the women’s league.

The NRLW salary cap rises from $350,000 in 2022 to $900,000 in 2023 with annual salary caps over the five-year cycle set as follows:

2023 – $900,000
2024 – $1,020,000
2025 – $1,254,000
2026 – $1,386,000
2027 – $1,518,000

Thus, by 2027, assuming that the Super League salary cap remains fixed as it has done for years despite growth in the NRL cap, the NRLW cap will be closer to the Super League salary cap than the NRL cap.

By then they will have a cap of £0.9 million which isn’t that far off the £2.1 million.

Meanwhile, the minimum NRLW salaries over the 5-year cycle are set as follows:

2023 – $30,000
2024 – $34,000
2025 – $41,800
2026 – $46,200
2027 – $50,600

This means by 2027 the minimum wage in the NRLW will be £29,000 which, if you believe Sam Tomkins, will be more than the minimum wages awarded in Super League to those just emerging.

This is of course fantastic news for women’s rugby league and for the top Super League stars who want to try their hand down under.

But it is another example of how the Super League cap needs to increase soon.
