Community work is a way to ‘give back’ to amazing fans claims Wigan Warriors’ talented youngster

Rugby league and community are very intertwined with plenty of clubs going above and beyond to help out those in their local area, and Wigan Warriors are a fine example of that.

The 2022 Challenge Cup winners have done plenty this off-season including helping out at a local food bank and that ethos of giving back to the fans is instilled right through the club, particularly with younger first team members.

Alex Sutton is a talented young centre and debuted for the club last year whilst also lifting the Grand Final trophy as a member of their unbeaten reserves side and he’s spoken about what being a Wigan fan is all about.

“Going into the community is massive, the fans turn up to watch whether it’s a Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday and they’re there cheering us on. I’ve not been part of a home game yet but when you’re up on the gantry you can see that the fans get the lads through the game.

“We just want to give back, going to the Brick I don’t really know how to describe the experience. It’s never nice seeing anyone having to go to food banks but what was nice was seeing people turn up and drop food off, it’s good to see.”

The youngster could well find himself as part of matt Peet’s plans for the coming season as well after being granted a squad number with the 21-year-old set to don the number 25 for 2023.
