Commentator praises “the best rule change in rugby league for 20 years”

Huddersfield Giants

As Huddersfield Giants battled back against Salford Red Devils on Saturday in the Challenge Cup, we saw a spectacular try.

The Giants trailed 24-0 early on against the Red Devils and looked headed for a hiding but three quick tries before the break gave Ian Watson and his side hope on his old stomping ground.

The first two tries came thanks to the slight of hand of Theo Fages as Sam Hewitt and eventual hat-trick scorer Luke Yates were the beneficiaries.

The third try made 24-16 at the break and went to Jake Bibby.

Bibby worked under Watson at Salford before joining Wigan Warriors winning the Challenge Cup prior to joining Watson at Huddersfield.

After a long run out of the side, Bibby is back in the mixed and took a delightful Jake Connor grubber kick before planting it in the corner.

A spectacular finish was required as cover darted across forcing Bibby into the corner flag.

This of course doesn’t matter any more and the try stood but once upon a time the try would have been disallowed.

This prompted the commentary team – which included former Super League stars Andrew Henderson and Leon Pryce – to brand it “the best rule change in rugby league over the past 20 years.”
