Commentator lords Leeds try as “one of the tries of the season”

Leeds Rhinos turned on the style yesterday in a performance that highlights the brilliance of the Rohan Smith Rhinos when they are at their best.

Like Salford Red Devils, they are one of the best teams in the league to watch and we saw why yesterday.

Whether it’s short kick-offs, crossfield kicks inside their own 10 metres, running halfbacks or the likes of Nene MacDonald and Jarrod O’Connor carving teams up off the back of quick rucks, the Rhinos when they are on form are never short of a highlight.

Even their missed opportunities were magic such as when MacDonald feigned to kick before nearly coming up with a magic finish or the brilliant break that could have led to Harry Newman’s second try of the game only for Newman to step on the whitewash.

The tries themselves were sublime from the Rhinos with a booming Cameron Smith pass, an Aidan Sezer offload, and break away tries for Derrell Olpherts and Newman the highlights.

But in the mind of Channel 4 commentator Mark Wilson there was a “try of the season” contender in the first half from the Rhinos.

This was their second try in two minutes when a Blake Austin bomb wasn’t dealt with by Tom Davies. There was then confusion between Davies and Nene MacDonald before Rhyse Martin picked it up and kicked ahead down the touchline before beating Arthur Mourgue to ground the ball in the corner.

In commentary, Wilson said: “That could be one of the tries of the season.”
