The Super League play-offs are upon us, and they kick off with Salford Red Devils facing Leigh Leopards tonight.
It’s the Red Devils that finished higher in the league, but Leigh come into the game on red-hot form, making this tantalisingly balanced.
We’ve selected a best combined 13 of players from the two sides.
Full-back: Matt Moylan (Leigh Leopards)
It’s no coincidence that Leigh’s upturn in form coincided with Matt Moylan moving to full-back.
His 18 try assists and five tries have given Adrian Lam’s side another dimension in attack.
Wingers: Deon Cross (Salford Red Devils), Josh Charnley (Leigh Leopards)
Deon Cross (12) and Josh Charnley (17) have a combined 29 tries in Super League this season, and are their respective sides’ top scorers.
Both are adept in defence as well, however, making them easy choices on the wing.
Centres: Nene Macdonald (Salford Red Devils), Tim Lafai (Salford Red Devils)
A formidable centre pairing for the Red Devils, and Macdonald has been one of the revelations of the season, with an excellent all-round game which has also seen him feature in the forward pack.
Lafai, meanwhile, is ever-dependable, and forms part of one of Super League’s best duos.
Halves: Lachlan Lam (Leigh Leopards), Marc Sneyd (Salford Red Devils)
This would be an unbelievable pairing in the halves – Lam leads Super League for try assists, while Sneyd sits just behind him in third-place – they have 46 between them.
Sneyd also stands far ahead of anyone else in the competition for attacking kicks, with his 224 absolutely miles ahead of his nearest competitor with 143.
Front row: Tom Amone (Leigh), Edwin Ipape (Leigh), Robbie Mulhern (Leigh)
An all-Leopards affair in the front row, but that’s for good reason.
Tom Amone could make a good argument for being the league’s best prop, and Robbie Mulhern has improved over the past couple of seasons, where he has become a key member of the Leopards side.
Meanwhile, Edwin Ipape is one of the best hookers in the league in terms of his running ability, jinking through defences all season.
Back row: Kai O’Donnell (Leigh Leopards), Kallum Watkins (Salford Red Devils), Oli Partington (Salford Red Devils)
Another incredible Leigh player comes in the form of Kai O’Donnell, and he has played every game this season for the side,
Salford have some big hitters too, however, and Kallum Watkins’ 845 tackles this year put him fifth in Super League. That’s on top of his obvious leadership abilities and versatility – he was a centre for most of his career.
Oli Partington, meanwhile, has made 833 tackles in another monster season for the man heading to Perpignan next year. The two Red Devils men are slightly ahead of Kai O’Donnell in the tackle charts.
