Coach jokes he doesn’t want his team to play well with Australian agents watching

Hull FC head coach Tony Smith with Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson

There has been a lot of discussion about Magic Weekend.

Ian Watson has now had his say on the matter.

He stated: “I kind of like it now. I like the competition, it’s different. I think what it does as well is it helps players kind of build and develop as well as the concept of getting all the supporters in there and taking it to a new kind of prepares and develops players, especially younger players.

“Some of the younger players may never have played in a big game like that, but this gives them a little bit of a sample of that, to be fair.

“So that’s why I like it, because I think it’s part of… well, it’s a great concept in getting all the teams there, and you look at Australia, they followed our concept of doing the magic weekend, and they all love it.

“I think for us as well, from my side, it helps develop players and it helps develop them into a bigger arena.”

He then joked that he hopes that his side don’t play too well with NRL agents coming across to watch the event:

“I think also it gives it a global view as a game because if you look, this game here, you get all the NRL interested in it, all the agents come across, all the NRL clubs are watching it because they’re seeing all the players from the UK all in one spotlight here at St James’ Park in a great venue.

“So hopefully not too many of your guys go too well in this weekend so that you’re not only there with them in our outcomes. Hopefully we win but they don’t play well.”
