Club’s license to sell alcohol upheld amidst alleged COVID breach
Featherstone Rovers’ license to sell alcohol has been upheld, after a Wakefield Council committee decided not to follow through on a police request to do so.
It’s alleged that there was a five-hour drinking “session” in the club’s Millennium Stadium clubhouse following a Challenge Cup victory over Batley in March, the Yorkshire Post has reported.
Featherstone forward Brett Ferres was fined and banned by the RFL, but no further action has now been taken with the committee agreeing with the club that they had not been “obstructive” during police investigations after the incident had taken place.
Club chairman Mark Campbell said: “I’m glad the councillors have come out in support of us.
“As a club and a business, we take all our responsibilities seriously.
“We’re pleased it’s all over because it’s dragged on and on.
“It’s cost everyone time, effort and money, notwithstanding taxpayer’
Club chief executive Martin Vickers, also commented: “We’ve always felt right from the outset that we’ve given the authorities full co-operation and today’s been a vindication of that.
“We’re glad the panel’s seen through this suggestion we were uncooperative, which was absolutely untrue.
“Today’s a vindication of how the club always professionally deals with such matters.”
