NRL club makes massive offer for Luke Thompson after Super League and NRL sides declared interest

Luke Thompson has reportedly been the subject of serious interest from NRL club.

That club is the Wests Tigers, according to zerotackle, with the former St Helens man being tipped to leave Canterbury Bulldogs for most of the off-season.

The Daily Telegraph had previously reported that Thompson continues to be shopped around – in both hemispheres – in a bid to get his lucrative contract off of the Bulldogs’ pay list.

The Englishman has been hitting the headlines following his initial refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccination, with NRL clubs calling for all their players to be vaccinated in order to play.

Thompson’s teammate John Asiata has already been given his marching orders by the Bulldogs’ hierarchy following his refusal to get the jab.

And, now the former St Helens forward has been offered to the Wests Tigers, according to reports Down Under after just one-and-a-half seasons at Belmore, but there is also speculation he could return to Super League.

The Bulldogs’ salary cap looks almighty close to the limit following the transfer of new signing Viliame Kikau who will be on a reported $800,000 a year when his contract starts in 2023.

That’s on top of new recruit Reed Mahoney’s $650,000 salary, whilst Thompson is said to be on $800,000 himself, according to Fox Sports.

Thompson had been linked with a move to the Tigers earlier in the season, with head coach Michael Maguire revealing that there had been serious interest in the former St Helens prop back in August, though the Englishman ended up staying with Canterbury.

There have also been reports linking Thompson with a move to Melbourne, but it is thought that the 26-year-old will be linking up with close friend Oliver Gildart at the Tigers.
