Sky Sports pundit Phil Clarke has suggested England RU boss Eddie Jones should join the England RL setup as an assistant.
Current England Coach Wayne Bennett’s contract has expired after the Great Britain tour, and it’s unclear at this stage if he will be offered a new deal.
The pundit, who also played for Wigan Warriors in the past, suggests Canberra Raiders Head Coach Ricky Stuart should take charge, and Jones should be his assistant.
“Here’s a name I’m gonna throw at you: Ricky Stuart supported by Eddie Jones,” Clarke said on Sky Sports Racing’s Big Sports Breakfast.
“Ricky Stuart loves the Brits, we all know that, that’s a fact. He would love a chance to get involved at the end of the season with the international game.
“There is no better supporter of rugby league in the north of England from down under than Ricky Stuart. And I also know that Eddie Jones loves his rugby league so he might come on board as an assistant.”

Phil Clarke spouts some drivel. Eddie Jones? I know let’s step back to 1895 and reboot. What a ridiculously stupid idea. He doesn’t even know our sport. Anyone remember Alan Jones, Balmain,led them to 11th, 10th, and 12th before his services were dispensed with. I believe he was considered one of the best Union coaches of the time. Out of his depth in League. There’s no place in League for Union coaches, theyre too different now.
As for Ricky Stuart, good luck getting him out of Canberra, they’re going to challenge again next year, his focus is going one better next season.
Either stick with Bennett, or find someone like Sinfield or Ellery Hanley to take the leadership role on selection and media handling but be underpinned in the coaching by top Super League coaches, ex players, and senior players.
If Shaun Wane comes back and spends a year coaching successfully maybe look at him then.
But Ricky Stuart? No chance.
