Christmas Wishes: What Wigan Warriors should wish for going into 2022

With it being around Christmas, we thought we’d look at what every Super League club would wish for this Christmas – within reason of course. To conclude, we’re looking at Britain’s most successful club Wigan who come into 2022 on the back of a disappointing season with hopes of becoming a real contender again.

The Warriors were expected to be a major force in the league last season after finishing top in 2020 even beating St Helens in a huge match to decide the location of the League Leaders’ Shield. They then went on to push the Saints all the way in the Grand Final and were a cruel twist of fate away from winning the Super League title.

This led to huge expectations going into 2021 and they started the season with a 100% record until they went away to Catalans and were put in their place by the eventual league leaders. After that, the Warriors struggled especially in attack slipping to fourth and crashing out of the play-offs having been kept tryless for the third time against a major rival.

Huge changes have subsequently taken place at the club with Matty Peet becoming the Head Coach supported by the likes of Shaun Wane, Sean O’Loughlin and Lee Briers whilst the club have also brought in Cade Cust as they prepare for a fresh start and a big year,

But, in order to enjoy a big year and become a serious contender at the top of the table, what should the Warriors be wishing for this Christmas time?

The answer: for the bookies to be right. Plenty of bookmakers are expecting Wigan’s stars to shine in 2022 with Cade Cust and Bevan French two of the favourites for the Man of Steel award whilst French is one of the favourites to finish the season as the top try scorer due to the electricity he brings the Warriors when fit and available.

There are of course rumours that French’s time at Wigan could be set to come to an end sooner rather than later, but if they can keep him they’ll be much stronger and much more likely to win the Super league crown especially if he’s in the conversation for the Man of Steel and top try scorer awards.

If these predictions are correct and Cust or French can finish the year as the Man of Steel whilst scoring tries for fun, the Warriors will likely be well and truly in the hunt for Super League glory. So, Wigan fans should be hoping that the bookies are on the money in 2022.
