Christmas wishes: What Warrington should wish for going into 2022

With it being Christmas time, we thought we’d look at what every Super League club would wish for this Christmas – within reason of course.  Warrington are beginning another new era in 2022 as they continue to chase that elusive first Super League title ending a decades-long wait for a Championship, but what does Daryl Powell need if he wants to be the man to deliver glory to the Halliwell Jones, what should have been on the club’s Christmas list?

The Wolves have been flirting with Grand Final glory since Tony Smith’s transformative impact took hold in 2011 and fired them to the top of the league, but he was unable to deliver success in Manchester and nor was Steve Price.

Since winning the Challenge Cup in 2019, things stalled for Warrington under Price despite the exciting arrival of former England international and NRL winner Gareth Widdop going into 2020 and George Williams’ transfer mid-way through last season.

Now Powell’s at the club and it’s widely believed that he’s a coach who can bring the very best out of players, developing them especially in attack. This all leads to the thing Warrington should wish for this Christmas: for Gareth Widdop and George Williams’ partnership to live up to expectations.

Two of the best English halves around, two of the best halves on the planet for that matter, on paper they’re perhaps the best halfback pairing in Super League going into next season and at their best would be capable of guiding any team to Super League glory let alone Warrington’s star studded squad adorned by a brilliant attacking coach.

So, if Warrington’s halves can click and play like they can, they could insert themselves as Super League favourites. Therefore, the Wolves should be wishing that Williams and Widdop play to their brilliant potential under Daryl Powell in 2022, if they do who knows their wait for a Grand Final win could be over come 8 pm on Saturday 24th September.
