Christmas wishes: What Wakefield Trinity should wish for going into 2022

With it being Christmas time, we thought we’d look at what every Super League club would wish for this Christmas – within reason of course. Time to turn to Wakefield who are truly turning over a new leaf after the era of Chris Chester at Belle Vue. So, as this new chapter truly begins, what will the club be hoping for? What should have been on their Christmas list?

The beginning years of Chester’s time at Wakefield were arguably the club’s best in the Super League era. They made the top eight three years in a row including consecutive fifth place finishes in 2017 and 2018. 2017 was a particular high as they spent most of the season in the top four and only just fell out of the semi-final spots at the end of the season.

In the years since, things didn’t go according to plan and the decision to switch gears and give Willie Poching an opportunity in the hotseat was made. The Super League winner was an injection of new life at the club and got them playing exciting and free rugby as they turned the corner and began their season best form.

A few new signings alongside the new found optimism brought in by Poching has Wakefield fans excited for the new season, but what exactly should they be wishing for in 2022?

Some outside Belle Vue may be sceptical of their play-off hopes going into the new season, but the form they showed at the end of last season was good enough to insert them in the race for finals rugby league if they can replicate it all season long in 2022.

Thus, the club should be expecting to be in the mix at the end of the season so their Christmas wish is simply that. They should have a place in the play-offs on their Christmas list as they look to end a 10-year wait to play a knockout game in Super League.
