Christmas wishes: What St Helens should wish for going into 2022

With it being around Christmas, we thought we’d look at what every Super League club would wish for this Christmas – within reason of course. Now is the turn of the Champions St Helens who couldn’t have wished for a better 2021 as they won the double whilst wrapping up a third consecutive Super League title. So, after such a fantastic year, what could the club possibly want for Christmas?

This St Helens team is arguably the best in the club’s history and only the third team in British rugby league to win three consecutive titles. Now having ended their Challenge Cup hoodoo which existed since 2008, they’ve ticked virtually every box except maybe one.

There’s one achievement the very best sides always go in search of these days and certifies them as one of the all-time greatest teams. Already a member of that esteemed category, nailing down this achievement could see this St Helens side considered the greatest of all time.

The achievement in question? The treble.

In 2018, the Saints looked destined to become the first club to win the treble twice as they dominated the league but shock semi-final defeats kept them out of both major finals. In 2019, they were even closer to the elusive treble. In fact, they were arguably a controversially disallowed try away from the Challenge Cup that would’ve ended their wait for glory in that competition and was the missing piece of the treble puzzle that particular season as they eased to the League Leaders’ Shield and then secured the Super League trophy at Old Trafford.

Then of course last season they finished behind beaten Grand Finalists Catalans in the table denying them the missing piece of the treble last season. So, a team as good as this current St Helens side should definitely have their eyes on all three trophies in 2022 and therefore the treble is exactly what St Helens should wish for this Christmas.

Winning the treble would cement this side as perhaps the greatest in Super League history, add to the legacies of players like Tommy Makinson, Alex Walmsley and Jonny Lomax whilst giving James Roby the perfect final season.
