Chris Chester among front runners for Wigan job

Chris Chester has secured the services of Ryan Hampshire for the next two years.

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester is one of the leading contenders to take over as Wigan head coach next season following Shaun Edwards’ U-turn.

Current boss Adrian Lam, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, remains the favourite with Super League sponsors Betfred at 4/1.

However, Chairman Ian Lenagan has yet to commit to Lam beyond the end of the current campaign and is considering other options.

The reigning Super League champions have struggled for form this season under their former player and sit ninth in the table, having won only four matches.

Contrast that with Chester whose Wakefield side have won four of their last five matches and have climbed to third position, despite numerous key injuries.

Chester, who is priced at 7/1 to be the Warriors next head coach, is also a former Wigan player and has taken Wakefield to a new level since his appointment at Belle Vue in 2016.

Other leading contenders to take over at the DW Stadium are Trent Barrett (8/1), Denis Betts (8/1), Shane Flanagan (10/1) and Tony Smith (12/1).

Shaun Wane is also in the running to be reinstated as Wigan coach despite only departing the club at the end of last year, his odds have come in to 8/1.
