Chester questions golden point rule

Chris Chester could not hide his frustration after Wakefield came back from a 14-point deficit against Hull FC, only to lose to a Marc Sneyd drop goal in golden point extra-time.

Trailing 20-6 at half-time, Trinity produced a stunning comeback to level the scores at 26-26 thanks to two late tries from Tom Johnstone.

But after Max Jowitt’s last-minute conversion attempt drifted just past the post, the game went into golden point and Sneyd’s boot won it for the visitors.

Speaking after the match, Chester described his side’s defeat as “heartbreaking” and admitted he still isn’t a fan of the golden point rule.

“I think I mentioned it at the laws committee meeting,” he said. “If you go to St Helens and you get a draw after 80 minutes, that’s not a bad result.

“But the powers that be want that bit of controversy. The rules are the rules, it’s two points or none and we know that.

“We need to be better on that kick-off and control the ball and the tackles better. We gifted Sneyd a free kick at goal, so yeah I’m really frustrated.”

Defeat leaves Wakefield ninth having won just two of their first five games this season.

Despite this, Chester is remaining upbeat and is taking the positives from their narrow loss to the black and whites.

“Credit to Hull FC, I thought that first 40 minutes they were good like last week,” said the Trinity head coach. “But we spoke about how it’s the back end of both halves you get joy against them.

“We continued getting that joy and I think we had five good ball sets towards their try-line all game and we came up with four tries, so there are lots of positives to take.

“The main thing is we didn’t panic when we were 14 points down, but we just kept gifting them some cheap possession and that’s what cost us.”

Trying to work out if Trinity avoided relegation due to winning in Golden Goal time last season? funny how coaches always whine when they lose!
