Channel 4 has been a revelation for rugby league fans in 2022.
With Sky Sports continuing its long-lasting deal with Super League, Premier Sports and Channel 4 have also taken on the mantle for other rugby league coverage.
Channel 4, in particular, has earned rave reviews when games have been broadcast, not least the first game of the terrestrial coverage era between Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves.
However, with normal host Adam Hills in Australia for Channel 4’s offering of Wigan Warriors against Salford Red Devils, Helen Skelton took the reins.
The game kicked off at 12.30pm as per usual, but the game took place on SUNDAY, 24 April instead of its usual Saturday slot.
Alongside Skelton, Martin Offiah, Sam Tomkins and Danika Priim were the pundits alongside Mark Wilson as main commentator.
However, Hills is set to return for Hull KR’s home game against Catalans Dragons on SATURDAY, May 21.
Hills has been an incredible ambassador for the sport since taking on a role at the Warrington Wolves’ PDRL side and spoke to the Warrington website about his time so far.
Hills said: “The phrase “a breathe of fresh air” has been used a lot and not just because we’re covering it pitchside!
“It’s been overwhelmingly positive and the amount of people watching has been great.
“I think the first game peaked at 750,000 people. Rugby League fans really love the sport and want it to be presented the right way.
“I also know that there’s a honeymoon period there and we need to keep getting it right every week.”
They have got it right every week so far and long may it continue!
