Championship side tie down head coach in quest for Super League return

Championship side Widnes Vikings' head coach Allan Coleman

Championship side Widnes Vikings have announced that head coach Allan Coleman has extended his contract at the club.

Coleman has been with the Vikings since 2024 and has signed a new two-year deal, with an option of a third year as well.

This extension means Coleman will remain as Widnes boss until at least 2027.

The Vikings currently sit in sixth place in the Championship, with three wins and one loss, but were just knocked out of the 1895 Cup at the quarter-finals stage by York Knights.

Talking to the club’s media, Coleman said: “I’m delighted to extend my stay as head coach of this great club.

“I feel as though in the last 18 months we’ve established the right ethos and our youth development is really on the up. This club is right for me, I want to be somewhere where it means everything to the fans and it certainly does here.

“It’s been an absolutely wonderful 18 months with this club and now that I’ve got another two and half years to go, I’m over the moon.”

Coleman led his side to its first play-off position since 2018 last season in his first season.

So far, Coleman has coached 41 games at the Vikings, winning 23 of them, giving him a 56% win percentage.

Before his move to Widnes, Coleman was the head coach at Swinton Lions, guiding them to Championship promotion in 2022.

Widnes chairman Stuart Murphy also added his thoughts on Coleman’s extension, adding that he’s glad to have him on board for another two years at least.

He said: “Allan has made a significant impact since joining the club. His passion, leadership, and understanding of what this club means to the town have been clear from day one.

“We’re thrilled he’s committed his future to our project and look forward to what we can achieve together over the coming years.”

Widnes host Barrow Raiders on Sunday afternoon in the Championship round six.
