Widnes Vikings have taken former Warrington Wolves youngster Aiden Doolan on trial ahead of the new Championship campaign.
Doolan joins the Vikings, his hometown club, just a few days before Allen Coleman takes his side to Warrington for a pre-season friendly clash at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The hooker is expected to get some game time and he’ll be keen to impress against his former club as he chases a permanent deal.
The 22-year-old started his career at Widnes before joining up with Warrington’s academy as as a teenager. However, he left the Wolves at the end of the 2023 season after failing to make a senior appearance in primrose and blue.
Doolan made the move to Australia last season and made one appearance off the bench for South Sydney Rabbitohs’ New South Wales Cup side. However, after a stint training with Warrington this pre-season he has now linked up with Widnes.
“The opportunity arose to get Aiden in on trial and we took it,” Coleman told Widnes’ official site.
“Unfortunately Jordan Johnstone has picked up a bit of a knock, so we’re down a nine, and it’s a bit too much for Foz to be involved in everything in pre-season.
“Aiden is a Widnes lad, he’s been down to Australia and come back and been training at Warrington for the first part of pre-season.
“But we had an opportunity to bring him in and we jumped at the chance. He’s really keen to play for Widnes and will get the chance on trial now.
“I’m keen to see it, he’s going to get a chance against Warrington on Friday which is very exciting for him.”
Doolan’s only other senior appearance came in the colours of North Wales Crusaders, with a try coming for the League One side in 2023 as part of a dual reg agreement with the Wolves.
