Championship side sign Warrington Wolves pair on dual reg deal

Widnes Vikings have strengthened their squad ahead of the 2024 season with the signings of Lucas Green and Tom Whitehead on dual registration from Warrington Wolves.

The two forwards join the Vikings for the 2024 season with the duo already boasting Super League experience in their young careers.

Widnes are under the coaching of Allan Coleman for the 2024 campaign with the intention to make the playoffs after missing out in 2023, and the big addition to their pack will go a long way to helping them achieve that.

The Vikings confirmed the pair’s signing as part of the two club’s dual registration deal via social media platform X, formerly Twitter, whilst also releasing a statement on their club website.

It read: “Widnes Vikings are pleased to announce the signings of Lucas Green and Tom Whitehead on dual-registration from Warrington Wolves for the 2024 season.

“Lucas Green is a prop forward, whilst Tom Whitehead plays in the second row. Having both made appearances in the Super League for Warrington, they bring some good experience to the group.

“Whitehead made his debut for Warrington against Salford Red Devils in 2022 and he made nine appearances in Super League last year.

“Green made his debut for Warrington last season against Wigan Warriors, going on to make 10 appearances in 2023.

“Both Tom and Lucas are available for this Sunday’s friendly against Workington Town.”

Vikings head coach Allan Coleman also commented on the duo’s arrival, stating: “It’s fantastic for us to get Lucas and Tom on the dual-reg.

“First I would like to thank Chris Hamilton and Gary Chambers for their help on this, to get them on board so early in the season is fantastic.

“They both played Super League last year for Warrington and showed the talent they have.

“I am a big admirer of young, up-and-coming players because they want to prove to everyone that they can go all the way.

“When you add them to the experienced championship players we have, I think that could be a great mix.

“It will be great to see them both make their debuts on Sunday in the Vikings colours.”

Warrington had previously handed out the pair squad numbers for the 2024 season indicating that they had been in new head coach Sam Burgess’ plans, however they head out to the Vikings at least for the start of the campaign.

Widnes get their season underway with the 1895 Cup fixture against Swinton Lions on Sunday 4th February meaning the Warrington pair have a month to get familiar with their new teammates.
