Championship side delve into university system again as they recruit for 2023

The Championship has seen dozens of big transfers in the off-season however not many sides will have rung the changes as much as Newcastle Thunder who have announced another signing for their 2023 campaign.
Tyneside-born Chris Thorman will take over at Thunder having most recently coached at Workington after a two brief stints at Huddersfield Giants.
Thunder have added in both depth and quality and the latest signing offers the third aspect that they’ve also focused on, youth.
Following on from the signing of Newcastle University and former Wakefield Trinity academy player Mac Walsh, Thunder have delved into that university side again by signing Max Flanagan to a one-year contract.
Flanagan is a utility back and will join alongside World Cup internationals such as Rob Tuliatu, Alex Young and Curtis Davies as well as an additional 10 players.
The Championship side announced the news via their website with Flanagan and coach Thorman both commenting.
“It’s great to have signed for Newcastle Thunder and be back amongst the fold.
“I’m really enjoying my rugby league with Newcastle University but I’m excited to make the step up and determined to make it a success.
“It’s been great training with the lads, and hopefully all the hard work we’re putting in will reflect in the performances on the pitch.”
Thorman added comments about Flanagan as well, with the youngster previously been training with the reserves.
“Max has been involved with the club previously, playing for the reserves. He’s currently studying at Newcastle University and is one of the lads that stood out from the games I’ve attended over the last couple of months.
“We invited him down to train on the back of that to see how he goes, and he’s really impressed. He can play full-back or half-back and has a really good understanding of the game.
“He has aspirations to work his way into the first team, and after talking to him he was really excited about playing for Newcastle Thunder.
“I’m excited to have him as part of our squad, and even though he’s not a local lad he highlights another one of our strong affiliations and close ties with the community, emphasising the links between the club and universities.”
