Championship RL results and round-up: Dewsbury and London collapse to keep scrap for survival open

This week, we were blessed with two rounds of Championship action with six games of the second round taking place today before Featherstone take on Bradford tomorrow on Premier Sports.

There was a lot up for grabs in the six games today especially at the bottom with both Dewsbury and London – who went into the round in 12th and 13th respectively just above Workington at the bottom – having halftime leads.

Dewsbury led Whitehaven 18-6 at the break whilst London shocked York by leading 18-8 at the interval. However, second half rallies from both Whitehaven and York put both to the sword leaving both clubs stranded in the bottom three alongside Workington with the Broncos occupying the other relegation spot just three years after a stint in Super League.

Speaking of Workington, they were soundly beaten by Batley away with Dale Morton crossing for an impressive four tries on the afternoon in a 46-0 win. That helped sure up their play-off spot and it was the same for Barrow who built on the back of an impressive performance against Leigh last time out all be it in vein – with a 44-4 win over out of sorts Widnes with Jarrod Sammut and Tee Ritson scoring twice each.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Eagles’ dominant first half away at Newcastle Thunder pathed the way for a 31-18 win over the thunder with Thackeray scoring twice and notching a drop goal.

Over in Leigh, 1895 Cup Winners easily saw off the in form Halifax Panthers despite having two days’ less rest. They won 36-0 with Blake Ferguson continuing his scoring spree since joining the club with two more tries.

It sends the Centurions top and leaves pressure on Brain McDermott’s Featherstone ahead of tomorrow’s game against Bradford.
