Championship RL results and round-up: All-time great debut steals the show as Dewsbury and Barrow serve up tight tussle

We’ve enjoyed another fantastic weekend of Championship rugby which is set to conclude with an exciting battle between Sheffield and Widnes on Monday night on Premier Sports.

However, the action got underway yesterday as Featherstone and Bradford picked up wins. For Featherstone it was business as usual as they racked up a massive scoreline against an unassuming Whitehaven side who seem to be a long way off the exciting heights they reached in 2021 as they made the play-offs.

The Rovers scored over a point per minute in the first half leading 46-0 at the break and went on to win 78-0. They scored 14 tries in total with Craig Hall kicking 11 goals as he ended the evening with 26 points. There were hat-tricks for former Cas man Jesse Sene-Lefao and Connor Jones.

Elsewhere on Saturday night the Bulls defeated Newcastle in a fiery affair at Odsal. In the first half, Bradford did all the damage taking a 24-0 lead at the break. In fact they took an early 18-0 lead before AJ Wallace made it 24-0 after Leeds Rhinos star Tom Holroyd – who was playing for the Bulls on dual reg – and former Wigan Warrior Jake Shorrocks had been red carded.

A try for Dec Patton shortly after the break all but sealed the win only for Newcastle to score 14 points without replay to make the scoreline more respectable. A try a piece in the last 10 rounded off a 36-20 win for the Bulls.

Today Batley got their play-off bid back on track after a humbling against Leigh on Monday. They ran out 28-12 winners over London despite trailing 12-0 at the break. A second half of dominance from the Bulldogs ensued however with Tom Gilmore scoring 12 points.

There was a close tussle not far down the road at Dewsbury as their second half fight back came to naught against a Barrow side picking up a much needed win after a recent slump for the Raiders. After falling behind to a 40-metre effort from Adam Ryder in the 57th minute, the Raiders won it with 12 to go through Jarrad Stack. The defeat leaves Dewsbury teetering one point above the relegation zone.

In what some might have seen as the game of the round between York and Halifax, it was the Panthers who went on to make light work of the Knights with an emphatic second half after leading just 22-18 at the break. Lachlan Walmsley scored a hat-trick in the 40-24 win which sees the Panthers close the gap on York in third to two points.

After seeing the statement win from top spot Featherstone on Saturday, Leigh conjured up a seismic score themselves defeating Workington 58-6. Remarkably, Krisnan Inu only kicked three goals as Leigh scored 13 tries. There were braces for Chamberlain, Inu, MacDonald and O’Donnell whilst Blake Ferguson came up with a great debut scoring four tries.

It leaves Leigh still just one point behind Fev in the table.
