Second tier outfit Sheffield Eagles have announced the signing of Hull KR hooker Reiss Butterworth ahead of the 2025 season.
Butterworth becomes the Eagles’ second signing of the off-season with the 25-year-old joining Corey Johnson in making the switch to South Yorkshire. The number nine spent just one season with the Robins and failed to make a competitive appearance for the club.
As such, with Rovers bringing in Micky McIlorum and Bill Leyland to add to their hooker depth for the new season, Butterworth has been allowed to leave Craven Park without the offer of a new deal. Butterworth will fancy of his chances of being able to impress with the Eagles, though, with the club looking to progress after finishing seventh last season in the Championship.
Starting his career with Bradford Bulls, Butterworth made his debut as a youngster back in 2017. However, he made just four appearances for the club before moving on to join Super League side Huddersfield Giants.
He made two outings in two seasons with the Giants with most of his game time during that spell coming during loan spells at Batley Bulldogs and York Knights. The hooker went on to spent three seasons with Dewsbury Rams in the second tier and it was at Crown Flatt where he really made his name.
In 62 outings for the Rams he scored eight tries with his form earning him another shot at the top flight with Hull KR. Ultimately, though, he struggled to get a look in at the east Hull club, with Butterworth being sent out for spells at Featherstone Rovers, London Broncos and Dewsbury once more.
After a season in which he struggled for continuity, he’ll be looking at the opportunity with the Eagles as a chance to hit top form once more and showcase his best stuff on a consistent basis.
