A National Two winner has become the latest member of Championship outfit York RLFC’s Hall of Fame.

Darren Callaghan is the 27th ex-player inducted into the exclusive group, alongside fellow York legends including Geoff Pryce, Graham Steadman and Willie Hargreaves.

A product of the local Acorn amateur side, Callaghan was one of the first players to join the newly-formed Knights after the old York Wasps club went bust in 2002.

Having made his Wasps debut in 1996, he was a regular in their ranks in 1999 and 2000 and starred for York Knights from 2003-2005.

Overall, the half-back turned centre/second-row played 137 times for York, scoring 41 tries, 10 goals and five drop goals and was part of the squad that won National League Two in 2005 to earn promotion to what is now the Championship.

Callaghan was selected by a committee consisting of Knights Supporters Society members, former players and journalists.

He will be officially inducted on Friday, January 17 during York RLFC’s 2025 Hall of Fame dinner at the city’s Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.

Fellow member and former team mate Mark Cain said: “He had full commitment, it meant everything to him as a player.

“It’s a pleasure to have him on board. I’m chuffed to bits for him, he deserves it. He still continues to put that energy into community rugby now.”
