Championship giants pencil in friendly day before season opener

A ‘select’ Bradford Bulls side will travel to Derwent Park to take on Workington Town for our final pre-season outing on Saturday 4th January.

Following pre-season clashes against Dewsbury Rams, Huddersfield Giants and Leeds Rhinos, players who aren’t involved in the 21-man squad for the season opener against Whitehaven will make the trip to Cumbria.

That season opener takes place a day later from 15:00 and the Bulls will be hoping they can start promotion push with a win.

Thus, those not playing in that opener will get game time against Workington. They adopted this philosophy last season.

Head Coach Mark Dunning revealed the reasoning behind this as he said he wishes they had played on Boxing Day.

“We would’ve played Boxing Day if we could, we would have been able to give all the lads the game time we wanted,” said Dunning.

“We will take a large squad to Dewsbury, then less to Huddersfield and then less to Leeds so the lads who are on the periphery we would’ve liked to have been able to give more game time to.

“Now we will travel to Workington on February 4th, Reserves Head Coach Leigh Beattie will take a team up of those not selected in the 21-Man Squad for Whitehaven for a real meaningful trial game against a really good Workington Town team.”
