Championship club Widnes Vikings have announced the signing of former NRL man Ben Condon. The forward has penned a deal until the end of the season in what comes as a big boost for the Vikings, who have struggled for consistency this year.
Condon will be a familiar name to Super League fans with the 24-year-old penning a deal with Leigh Leopards last year for the 2025 season. However, he never actually pulled on leopard print with his contract being cancelled before he arrived at the club.
That decision was made due to an injury that caused concern for Leigh’s medical team. Leigh released a statement in December to explain his contract had been cancelled with the club ‘unable to continue with the transfer’ before the arrival of Alec Tuitavake was announced.
Condon has now recovered from that injury and he has now taken up a contract offer from Widnes. Having come so close to a Super League deal, he’ll be determined to impress in Vikings colours and earn a contract for next season, either at Widnes or in the top flight.
Condon has 17 NRL appearances to his name having spent time with North Queensland Cowboys and Manly Sea Eagles during his career so far. The Australian is versatile and can play in a number of positions across the pack, with time spent in the middle and in second-row while playing in the NRL.
Ben Condon delighted to join Championship club
“I’m so excited to be part of such an awesome club and community, I can’t wait to get over there and rip in,” he told the Widnes Vikings website after signing.
“I want to thank Allan, Stuart, and the board for organising to get me over there so quickly. I can’t wait to meet everyone.”
Head coach Allan Coleman said: “I’m absolutely over the moon, there’s been a lot of work behind the scenes for a couple of weeks now to get this over the line.
“It’s really exciting to get Ben, he’s probably the highest profile player we’ve brought to the club since I’ve been here. He’s a giant of a man, a tough, no-nonsense forward who won’t take a back step.
“Bringing him in typifies exactly where we want to get to as a club, and he comes in at the right time when we’re really thin on the ground for bodies, so it’s fantastic to get him.”
