Championship outfit Workington Town have landed former Warrington Wolves triallist Bear Williams on a deal for the new season.
Williams has spent pre-season with the Wolves but he has now left the Halliwell Jones Stadium and taken up a deal with Workington, who face Barrow Raiders in their Championship season opener today.
The front-rower has a rugby union background and represented second tier outfit Cornish Pirates briefly back in 2021. However, shortly after deciding to switch codes he landed a shot with South Sydney Rabbitohs.
He made seven appearances for the Rabbitohs in the New South Wales Cup, with his one try down under coming against Manly Sea Eagles’ second string in March 2025.
He joins Workington after initially reaching out to the Cumbria based outfit towards the end of last season and he arrives with a recommendation from Warrington director of rugby Gary Chambers.
“Bear came to our attention around August / September time when we were looking for middles when he was at South Sydney,” Workington recruitment coordinator Ash Kilpatrick said. “Bear sent us his clips and Jonty liked what he saw, reminding him of a front rower he had at Whitehaven in Huw Worthington.
“Fast forward a few months and Bear became available after completing a pre season at Warrington Wolves. I spoke to Gary Chambers who couldn’t speak highly enough of him and said he would be an asset for us if we could get him in, this recommendation is highly valued and the club acted quickly to secure Bear’s services and glad to say Bear has signed until the end of the year with us.
“A huge thank you to ‘Chem’ at Warrington for his advice on Bear and recommending him.”
