Championship club part ways with head coach after wretched run

Championship

Championship outfit Hunslet have made the decision to part ways with head coach Dean Muir.

The decision comes after the club’s 72-6 hiding at the hands for London Broncos on Sunday, with Hunslet remaining rooted to the foot of the Championship table. The south Leeds side have won just two games all season, with the Broncos ahead of them by just two points.

As such, it’s been a difficult season for Hunslet following their promotion from League One last season and as it stands they look destined to head straight back down to the third tier.

The change has been made in an attempt to save their season, then, with chief executive Neil Hampshire saying in a club statement. “The club would like to place on record our thanks to Dean for all his hard work and dedication whilst in the role.

“He will forever be etched in the club’s folklore for the way he guided us through the play-offs and into the Championship at the end of last season. Unfortunately, however, results so far this year have fallen short of expectations and the club has decided that we need to move in a different direction. We’d like to wish Dean all the best for the future.”

Muir, who worked at at Keighley Cougars before taking on the Hunslet head coach role before the start of the 2024 season. He enjoyed instant success with the West Yorkshire club, too, with promotion coming in his first season with the club.

That came after a fourth placed finish allowed Hunslet to progress through four play-off rounds before booking their spot in the promotion play-off against Swinton Lions, who were a Championship side at the time. Hunslet secured the victory, beating the Lions 22-20 at Heywood Road, to secure their spot in the second tier.

However, with 10 games and a Super 8s competition to play, Hunslet have made the change in a bid to inspire a turnaround and get themselves out their slump, with their last victory coming in May against Sheffield Eagles.
