Featherstone Rovers have announced the signing of yet another overseas recruit heading into 2025, in the form of Zach Herring. The Australian half-back makes the switch from Newcastle Knights, having penned a one-year deal to represent James Ford’s side in the Championship next season.
Herring is just 23 years of age and arrives at the Millennium Stadium after spending last season playing in the Knights’ New South Wales Cup side, alongside the likes of former Huddersfield Giants man Will Pryce, making 20 appearances and scoring one try. He spent two years in the second string at St George Illawarra Dragons prior to last season, but is still waiting to make his first grade debut.
Herring is versatile and while it seems Featherstone have signed him to play in the halves, potentially alongside Ben Reynolds, he can also play at hooker and spent much of last season in the number nine role.
He becomes just the latest man to sign for the Flat Cappers, with the addition of ex-Warrington Wolves man Sitaleki Akauola being announced this morning, while the likes of Carlos Tuimavave, Derrell Olpherts, Clay Webb and Toby Boothroyd have also been confirmed over the last few days.
“As soon as the chance came up to make the move to the UK with Fev, I jumped at it, it’s a massive opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get going,” Herring told the Featherstone Rovers website.
“It’s going to be a completely new experience for me; it’s exciting to get out of my comfort zone and I’m ready to show the club and the fans what I can do.
“I’m joining a really talented squad, full of quality players, I’m looking forward to earning a spot in the 17 and having an impact.”
Head coach Ford said: “At 23 we’re confident he has plenty of development left in him and I’m excited to see him compete against the other half-back options for a starting spot.
“He has a quality running game and is a strong left footed kicker, something that will bring more balance to our last tackle options.”
